How To Remove Fuel Injectors

Removing your fuel injectors may seem like a daunting task. But with a bit of guidance, you can do it yourself and save on labor costs. TLF Performance Parts even offers an expert advice service if you need some pointers before beginning - you can schedule a call here. Most fuel injection systems have a very similar layout, so these pointers will apply to a broad range of vehicles.

Tools Needed

The tools needed for fuel injector removal are common - you probably already have them in your garage:

  • Ratchet and Socket set
  • Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips)
  • Pliers (to remove the injectors)
  • Protective goggles, gloves, and a cloth (for any fuel spills)

Fuel Injector Removal In 4 Easy Steps

1. Disconnect Battery

Ensure that the engine is cold and disconnect the battery. You don’t want to burn or shock yourself while working under the hood. You may want to remove the fuel relay found in the fuse box, too. This

2. Remove Protective Coverings

Most modern cars have a plastic shroud covering the engine. This needs to be removed to get access to the fuel injector rail. In a V-type engine, you will have a rail for each bank of cylinders. The plastic covers are usually secured to the engine block by small screws or clips.

3. Disconnect Fuel Injectors

You should see a fuel rail running along the top of the engine. These are held in place with bolts or brackets. For some designs need you to remove the fuel line as well as the fuel rail before you can access the injectors. This is where the protective gear and cloth will come in handy as some residual fuel may spill out.

4. Remove Fuel Injectors

In most cars, there is an injector for each cylinder. These are held in place with small clips and have an electrical connector on top. Wires run from these connectors to the fuel rail. Gently remove the electrical connectors and then pull each injector out carefully.
